Allspice is the dried, unripe berries of the Pimenta dioica tree, native to the Caribbean and Central America. Despite its name, it is a single spice, not a mix, with a flavor profile that combines notes of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper. It is used in both sweet and savory dishes, from desserts and pickling spices to jerk chicken and Swedish meatballs, and is also used in traditional medicine and cosmetics.
