Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident while riding in a Lexus SUV, and authorities are currently investigating the situation, according to Oluseyi Babaseyi, a police spokesperson for Ogun State.
Joshua was sitting in the back of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries, and is receiving medical care. He could not be reached for a comment right away.
Social media photos appeared to show the boxer being rescued from a damaged car while displaying signs of pain. The accident happened on a major roadway connecting Ogun State, a nearby area, to Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub.
Olusegun Ogungbemide, a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, said that early investigations suggest the vehicle was speeding and lost control while trying to overtake before crashing into a parked truck.
A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, told The Punch newspaper that Joshua was in a Lexus that collided with a stationary vehicle. He mentioned, “Joshua was sitting behind the driver with another passenger next to him. There was also a passenger next to the driver, making four people in the Lexus. His security team was in a separate vehicle behind them.”
Orojo also noted, “The passenger next to the driver and the person beside Joshua died at the scene.”
Joshua, whose parents are British-Nigerian, attended a boarding school in Ikenne, about 85 kilometers (53 miles) from the crash site, before moving back to the UK at the age of 12. The British boxer has been in Nigeria following his victory against YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul on December 19.
