May Agbamuche-Mbu is the new Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). She assumed the position on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, following the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who concluded his two-term, ten-year tenure. 

Key facts about the leadership change:
Succession: As the most senior National Commissioner at INEC, Agbamuche-Mbu was handed the leadership role by the outgoing chairman, Yakubu.
Transition: She will oversee the commission's affairs until President Bola Tinubu appoints a substantive chairman, who will require confirmation by the Senate.
Background: Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer from Delta State, was first appointed as a National Commissioner in 2016. She was reappointed in 2021 and is the chair of the Legal Services, Clearance, and Complaints Committee.
