The Nigerian Federal Government has mandated that, effective January 1, 2026, all taxable individuals and entities must have a Tax Identification Number (TIN) to operate bank accounts and engage in other financial services.

This requirement applies to taxable persons including individuals with income, businesses, and government bodies. Individuals without taxable income, such as students, are exempt.
A separate TIN is not required for most citizens as the system uses existing national IDs. The National Identification Number (NIN) serves as the TIN for individuals, while businesses use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

Taxable persons without a NIN or CAC registration should register before the January 2026 deadline. Information on TINs is available on the Joint Tax Board or FIRS websites. Non-compliance after the deadline could result in penalties.
